In August 2024, OUI Inc.’s COO, Mr. Nakayama, and Ms. Kojima, a 5th-year medical student intern, visited Mozambique, a country in southeastern Africa with a population of approximately 30 million. The primary purpose of this visit was to meet with collaborators at Lúrio University to further ongoing epidemiological research using our Smart Eye Camera (SEC).
In Nampula, at Lúrio University, Ms. Kojima and Mr. Nakayama presented the progress and findings of the SEC-based epidemiological research that has been conducted in collaboration with Lúrio University and Ehime University. The presentation highlighted the use of SEC in collecting data on eye diseases and showcased the results of the ongoing study.
Additionally, the team observed how local optometrists, actively involved in the research, conduct data collection using SEC in the Muatara community. They also interviewed the village chief, gaining insights into the community’s healthcare needs and their engagement in the study. The proactive involvement of local residents during the screenings highlighted their strong interest in accessing medical care.
Next, in Maputo, they presented the findings of their epidemiological study at the XIX Jornadas Científicas conference held at the Instituto Superior de Ciências de Saúde (ISCISA), under the guidance of Dr. Dulnério. This year’s conference theme was public health, and OUI Inc.’s presentation on the application of our SEC in epidemiological research attracted significant attention. After the presentation, they received numerous questions and comments from local healthcare professionals, indicating strong interest in expanding collaborative efforts. Moving forward, OUI Inc. plans to collaborate on joint research projects in Maputo.
This visit allowed many to witness the potential of our SEC in epidemiological studies. OUI Inc. is committed to further enhancing collaboration with local healthcare professionals to improve the quality of ophthalmic care in Mozambique and globally.
