In October 2023, OUI Inc.’s CEO Dr. Shimizu and COO Mr. Nakayama visited the Philippines and Malaysia. The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationships between OUI Inc. and the local collaborators, as well as to exchange ideas about implementing the Smart Eye Camera in various ways.

In the Philippines, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness, and the incidence of diabetic retinopathy is also on the rise. First, a meeting was held with Dr. Asuncion, who provides medical services to the indigenous people in the sparsely populated areas of the Mindanao Island. With only one ophthalmologist in the state, Dr. Asuncion, though not an ophthalmologist, attends to basic diseases such as conjunctivitis, cataracts, and ocular trauma. Our future collaboration has been decided.. Additionally, an agreement was reached with Dr. Uy, an ophthalmologist, to proceed with joint research using our Smart Eye Camera.

Following the Philippines, COO Nakayama visited Malaysia. With a population of 33 million, there are approximately 1,000 ophthalmologists and about 4,000 optometrists. The visit began at the National University of Malaysia, where a presentation and demonstration of our Smart Eye Camera were given to optometry students. The students were able to take videos skillfully using our Smart Eye Camera. A meeting was also held with the head of the Optometry Department. There is an island located at the border between the Philippines and Malaysia, inhabited only by indigenous people, with a population of about 2,000 and only three wells for drinking water, indicating a lack of basic electrical and water infrastructure. We hope that our Smart Eye Camera can be utilized for high-quality eye screenings in such underserved areas.

Through this visit, we were able to present to a wide audience in the Philippines and Malaysia the potential of the Smart Eye Camera! OUI Inc. will continue to collaborate with medical professionals in those countries and work on developing innovative ophthalmic diagnostic models through our Smart Eye Camera.
